High Bay light fixtures are generally used in areas with high ceilings or mounting heights greater than 5 meters and are most commonly found in commercial and industrial applications such as warehouses, factories and large open areas with high ceilings. LED high bays are the energy efficient alternative to traditional HID high bays like Mercury Vapour (MV), High Pressure Sodium (HPS) or Metal Halide (MH). Upgrading to quality LED high bay luminaires will improve lux levels safety, and visibility. Building and/or business owners will also benefit from major savings in energy and maintenance costs.
HID high bay lamps draw a lot of power and require a warm-up time to achieve full brightness. The ballasts of these light fixtures also consume additional power (about 10%). The most common type of HID high bay found in South Africa is a 400W mercury vapour. LED high bays typically save between 40-75% in energy consumption depending on the efficiency and application of the LED high bay luminaires used.
LED high bays also have a much longer useful life than HID high bay lights. Quality LEDs have a useful life of between 50,000-100,000 hours compared to say a Metal Halide lamp with a typical lifetime of between 6,000-15,000 hours depending on switching cycles. HID high bay ballasts must also be replaced periodically. Due to the high mounting heights and general inaccessibility to high bay fittings, the superior lifetime of LED high bays results in much lower maintenance costs and downtime.
LED high bays have now also surpassed Induction High Bays as the go-to solution because they are more affordable and brighter with various wattages, lumen outputs and beam angles available to cater to the many different mounting heights and applications for reseller projects.
Another way of converting existing HID high bays to energy efficient LEDs is to retrofit the existing HID lamp to an LED high bay lamp. This allows one to retain the existing high bay fittings. Our range of LED high bay retrofit lamps are an ideal replacement solution and provide an excellent light output with a solid 3-year warranty. They come with a standard E40 base so the electrician just needs to bypass the existing control gear and wire live and neutral directly to the lamp holder before simply screwing in the LED high bay retrofit lamp.
